Separate the ways that people use apps

Chris Dixon has a helpful post on categorizing your mobile app:

1. Time wasters – Apps that can be used for short bursts when you are waiting in line
   1. Time wasters tend to be faddish
2. Core utilities –  core utilities are the apps on your home screen:
   1. Core utilities tend to be very sticky
3. Episodic utilitie – typically aren’t on the home screen but are extremely useful in certain situations
   1. Category specific: think Hipmunk, Uber, Open Table
4. Notification-driven apps – this is an emerging category
   1. Expect this category to grow as apps get smarter about when to notify, and battery life improves dramatically over the next year or two.
